Place Words for the Imposter Game

From a supermarket to a lighthouse, these 60 places give players clues about what happens there, what they hear and what they might bring.

Choose words everyone can use

Locations make good secret words because they have sounds, routines, objects and unwritten rules. Try to keep clues at that level. Listing the exact address or naming a landmark can reveal the answer before other players get a turn.

20 everyday places

Start with places people visit. A place can be a room, a building or an outdoor area; choose one level if your group prefers a tighter theme.

  • Kitchen
  • Bedroom
  • Bathroom
  • Garden
  • Garage
  • School
  • Library
  • Supermarket
  • Bakery
  • Cafe
  • Restaurant
  • Park
  • Playground
  • Hospital
  • Pharmacy
  • Post office
  • Bank
  • Gym
  • Cinema
  • Bus stop

20 travel and leisure places

Think about activities rather than naming a city. This keeps the round accessible to people who have not travelled to the same countries.

  • Airport
  • Train station
  • Hotel
  • Hostel
  • Campsite
  • Beach
  • Swimming pool
  • Museum
  • Zoo
  • Aquarium
  • Stadium
  • Theatre
  • Concert hall
  • Theme park
  • Ski resort
  • Harbour
  • Ferry
  • Service station
  • Market
  • Picnic area

20 less obvious locations

Use these when everyone can picture the setting. Choose an alternative if a location needs a long explanation before play.

  • Lighthouse
  • Observatory
  • Greenhouse
  • Windmill
  • Workshop
  • Recording studio
  • Backstage
  • Control tower
  • Fire station
  • Courthouse
  • Warehouse
  • Quarry
  • Cave
  • Waterfall
  • Orchard
  • Vineyard
  • Botanical garden
  • Ice rink
  • Skatepark
  • Rooftop

Six clues to try

These are starting points, not answers to memorise. A clue works only if the people playing can make the connection. The imposter should hear the clue, not the secret word.

  • Library → Whisper: Points to a social rule rather than an object.
  • Airport → Queue: A common experience, not a unique answer.
  • Beach → Towel: An object used at several leisure places.
  • Lighthouse → Warning: Describes its purpose without naming the sea.
  • Greenhouse → Humid: A physical sensation that informed players can place.
  • Backstage → Nerves: A feeling linked to the location.

Build a fair round

For a fair pack, use settings people understand even if they have not visited them. A hospital is widely recognisable; a particular members-only club may not be. Avoid treating professional knowledge as proof: someone unfamiliar with backstage work can still give a valid clue.

These are word-clue rounds. Spyfall uses a different structure, with a shared secret location and questions between players. If you want that format, read how the Imposter game differs from Spyfall rather than quietly changing the rules halfway through.
