Imposter Game Apps for iPhone: What to Compare

Start with where your friends will play and what the hidden role should know. Those two decisions matter more than a long list of app-store stars.

Choose the playing format first

Will everybody be in the same room, or does each player need to connect from somewhere else? A shared-phone game and a remote room solve different problems. “Multiplayer” on a listing does not, by itself, tell you which one you are getting.

The following is a documented-feature shortlist, not a ranking of the best apps. It is published by Spiono, and no independent hands-on testing is claimed.

Three apps with different priorities

AppUseful starting pointRole or format to check
SpionoAn in-person game on one shared iPhone, offline after installation.Classic no-word bluffing, custom packs and scores; selected modes and categories can require Premium.
UndercoverIts listing describes offline shared-phone play and an online option.Civilians share a word, Undercover players receive a related word, and Mr. White receives none.
PicoboomImposter.app links to this iPhone app; its listing describes online and pass-and-play games.Check the current Imposter mode, setup and available packs in the listing.

Picoboom’s current US listing is titled “Picoboom Color Hunt & Imposter” and names Vanilla b.v. as developer. It is not a separate app simply named after the imposter.app domain. Listing names may differ by market.

Ask the questions that affect your group

  • Can one person install it for a same-room game, or does everyone need a device?
  • Does the mode work without a connection after installation?
  • Does a remote mode require an account? Do not assume local and online requirements match.
  • Does the hidden player see no word or a related word?
  • Which modes or packs are included, and which purchases are optional?

Download labels and in-app purchases are different things. A free download does not mean every mode or category is free. Check current local purchase details instead of relying on an old price comparison.

Try a practice round before choosing a pack

Use an ordinary word and explain the role information clearly. If players are arguing about whether two different words exist, the problem may be an unexplained mode rather than a bad clue.

A short practice also shows whether your group prefers fixed clue turns, discussion or a different-word puzzle. Choose the format before buying additional content.
